International Calling (Including Caribbean)

Enables a NetSapiens user to place international calls, including PIN-protected Caribbean numbers, and walks through dialing one.

International calling is disabled for a user by default and must be enabled per user before that user can dial outside the North American Numbering Plan (NANP).

⚠️

PIN Now Required for Caribbean Calls Dialed as 1+

A PIN is required for calls placed to the Caribbean using the 1+ dialing format, the same as it already is for 011 international calls. The calling experience is otherwise unchanged — the PIN prompt appears before the call connects.

High-Risk Countries Included as of January 2026

International Protected Calling — the PIN-protection behavior described below — was expanded in January 2026 to include a set of high-risk countries in addition to standard international destinations.

Enabling International Calling

  1. Select Users from the top of the Xima UCaaS Admin Portal, then edit the user — see UC Users
  2. Under Dial Planning, set Dial Permission to Limited International
📘

Other Dial Permission Levels Exist

Limited International is the level confirmed to allow international dialing. Other Dial Permission levels exist for more restricted calling but are not enumerated here.

A domain's default Dial Permission can also be set to Limited International from that domain's own Defaults configuration, so any new user created afterward is enabled for international calling automatically. This default does not apply retroactively to existing users.

Placing an International Call

A call within the NANP is dialed normally, starting at the area code and phone number step below.

  1. Dial 011, the US exit code for placing an international call
  2. Dial the destination country's country code (for example, 353 for Ireland)
  3. Dial the area code, if required, and the phone number — both the need for an area code and its format vary by country
  4. If prompted, enter the calling phone's voicemail PIN
  5. The call connects once the PIN is accepted

If a Call Fails to Connect

A failed call's reason code is available in call history for a login scoped Office Manager or higher — see User's Scope.
